TMJ Home Remedies

While there is no substitute for seeing a good TMJ specialist, you should get used to treating yourself at home. In fact, 60-80% of those with TMJ pain who are treated with conservative therapy have a full recovery. That conservative therapy starts at home. Read on to learn what you can do.

Heat Treatments
Heat is good for increasing blood flow to the joint. Prior to TMJ exercises applying moist heat to the affected area will loosen the area and allow for more effective movement and rehabilitation.
Cooling Treatments
Jaw ice is best used after rehabilitation exercises to prevent inflammation. Ice cools and slows blood flow, effectively decreasing the flow to the area of application and secondarily decreases inflammation.
Massage Therpay
Massaging your muscles is highly therapeutic. Do it yourself or have a loved one rub lightly in small circles over the masseter and temporalis muscles located on the side of your jaw and temples respectively.
Soft Diet
Your TMJ takes a beating with all the talking and chewing you do. Give it a break by switching up your diet for a soft, non-chew diet. Usually a 3-6 week course of this diet will do wonders for your TMJ.
Stretching
Stretching your jaw by slowly opening wide and sliding your jaw left and right can really loosen up your muscles of mastication (chewing muscles).
Stress Reduction
Stress plays a huge role in your TMJ/Muscle pain. Reducing stress, getting good sleep and taking a load off go a long way towards a healthier TMJ.
