TMJ Medications
Nobody likes popping pills, but some TMJ medications can really give you a jumpstart to recovery with your TMJ Disorder.
1. Muscle Relaxants
The first really helpful TMJ medications are Muscle Relaxers. Muscle relaxants are helpful to break muscle spasms. Most muscle relaxants cause drowsiness as well. While this can sometimes be an undesirable side-effect it is actually very helpful in that they allow you to sleep deeply and not grind at night.
Examples: Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), Robaxin
2. NSAID's (Non Steroidal anti-inflammatory Drugs)
These are medications that 1. are pain relievers and 2. aid in reducing the inflammatory process.
Examples: Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin), Tramadol (Ultram)
3. Sleep Aids
Getting a good night sleep can go a long way towards relieving your symptoms. It decreases stress and muscle activity at night which means less clenching and grinding.
Examples: Clonidine, Halcion
4. Antidepressants
Don't let the stigma scare you. Chronic pain can do a number on your psyche. Getting out of that funk is really important to getting back to normal.
