Botox for TMJ

How can Botox help my TMJ?

Botox is a "neuromuscular blocker." In other words, Botox prevents your muscles from contracting. Botox is commonly used in cosmetic procedures to paralyze the muscles which as a secondary benefit causes the skin to wrinkle less. Botox can also be used on the muscles of mastication (jaw muscles). Most of the time TMJ pain is caused by muscle tension. Botox releases this muscle tension by preventing the muscles from contracting. Botox for TMJ is an effective and safe way to relax your muscles without having to pop pills every day.

Will I be able to move my face?

Yes. The botox is injected into the muscles that operate your jaw, not your muscles of facial expression. Botox causes the muscles that it contacts to stop contracting. The goal of this treatment is to inhibit much of the muscle to stop contracting but not all of it. You will still have the ability to eat, chew and talk without difficulty.

How long does Botox last?

Botox therapy for TMJ last for between 3 and 4 months. The effect of the botox begins approximately 1 week after the injections and you may need 3 injections per year. This is not a long term treatment and most people just need a jump start on recovery with a few rounds of botox.
